Residential garbage service in Walton County is paid for by a 1 percent surtax on taxable items sold within Walton County.  The proceeds from this tax pay for Walton County residential collection services and for disposal services of both residential and commercial solid waste.  Solid Waste is under the direction of  the Walton County Public Works Division.

There are three areas of collection in Walton County:  Map

City of DeFuniak Springs (850) 892-8500 serves only residents and businesses within its city limits.

Waste Management Area A (850) 835-0248 is South Walton, Villa Tasso to Portland along Highway 20, and some areas just north of the Choctawhatchee Bay in Freeport.

Waste Management Area B (850) 835-0248 is the City of Freeport, the City of Paxton, and all other North Walton addresses except the City of DeFuniak Springs and the Waste Management Area A addresses.

WALTON COUNTY CENTRAL LANDFILL is located about 3.5 miles north of DeFuniak Springs just off State Highway 83. Take a right onto Institution Road and follow to the end.

Virtually all household garbage, yard waste, and recycling material is brought to the Walton County Landfill for disposal or recycling. Walton County residents may bring their own garbage and dispose of many materials for free at the Central Landfill. Items not allowed in landfill: batteries, treated wood, lead paint, motor oil, chemicals, and other Hazardous Materials.

Walton County promotes recycling. Recycling trailers are located throughout the County for your convenience. The trailers take office paper, newspaper, phone books, magazines, no. 1 and no. 2 plastics without lids, and steel or aluminum cans. Please see our recycling page for additional information.
