Pet Needs and Safety
Evacuation
Red Cross shelters do not accept pets because of health and safety regulations.  Service animals are the only animals allowed in a Red Cross shelter.  Contact hotels and motels outside Walton County to check policies on accepting pets and restrictions on number, size and species.  the hotel industry maintains a web site at www.petswelcome.com that provides searchable information on hotels and motels that allow pets.

Ask friends or family outside the area if they could shelter your animals.  Also, prepare a list of boarding facilities and veterinarians who could shelter animals in an emergency.  Keep a list of all names and telephone numbers, and have a backup plan for your pet's care.

Pet Supply Kit
Store all items in a sturdy waterproof container that can be carried easily.  Your kit should include:

  • Medications, medical records and vaccination certificates on all pets.
  • Leashes, harnesses and/or carriers big enough for your pet to be able to stand up and turn around.
  • Pet bedding and toys.
  • Food and drinkable water for five days, bowls and a can opener, if needed.
  • Cat litter and pan.
  • Information on feeding schedule, medical conditions, behavior problems and name and number of veterinarian in case you have to foster or board your pet.

Owners of large animals should prepare an animal safety plan according to specific needs.  Talk to your veterinarian for more information.
